DUIs can change lives; here's what you should know

Going out on the town is fun, and it's especially thrilling when you're somewhere new with your friends or family. Experiences make a good vacation, but some experiences are better left to others. For example, drinking too much and ending up with a DUI probably isn't what you want to see happen on your family vacation.

Still, mistakes do happen, so it's possible that you or a loved one could end up violating the law. If that happens, you need to know what to do to prevent penalties from impacting your life.

A DUI is given when someone is operating a vehicle under the influence with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 percent or higher. The way officers find out what your BAC is starts with a breath test. If you blow into the Breathalyzer, a percentage will come up. That's the level of alcohol in your blood.

Another thing the officer may do is ask you to participate in a field sobriety test. With this, you complete easy physical tests that those who are not intoxicated would generally be able to complete without trouble.

In both cases, there's room for error. If you don't believe the Breathalyzer is correct or if you think you did something that affected the outcome, like burping, you should bring this up. This is just one possible way that you could defend yourself and end up walking away without a DUI. Your attorney can talk to you more about the options open to you in your case depending on the facts surrounding your arrest.
